we're told there are not a lot of americans studying at the university, but there are a number of american faculty members. the us embassy in kabul is trying to account for those americans./// ((dave courvoisier)) the death toll continues to rise following a 6.2 earthquake across central italy. rescuers are still trying to reach victims trapped in the rubble. there are reports of 159 people feared dead. tina kraus has more from rome. the powerful earthquake shook people out of their beds in the middle of the night across central italy. much of amatrice, a town 100 miles northeast of rome. rescue teams and volunteers are digging through mountains of debris where homes once stood. in capodacqua, an emergency worker tried to calm a woman trapped in the rubble. she appeared badly injured with her face barely visible under the wall that fell on top of her. the earthqauke hit just after 3:30 am while many people were sleeping. so far there have been dozens of powerful aftershocks.

((karen castro)) >> witness testimony is still going on inside the courtroom at this hour. during opening statements this morning, the prosecutor told jurors michael solid is a murderer but his defense attorney says it was an accident. the family of the victim, 15 year old marcos arena, packed the courtroom today. many of them cried as the prosecutor showed a graphic picture of the victim's body. and said there was overwhelming evidence including surveillance video, witnesses, and dna, to prove solid hit arenas with a white suv while the defendant's friend struggled with the victim over an ipad. however, the defense says, according to reports from first responders at the scene, arenas' injuries are consistent with an accidental crash. the young victim's father was the first witness called to the stand by the prosecution. ivan arenas purchased the ipad for his son as a gift for doing

the i-team's vanessa murphy was in court today when the clark county grand jury indictment was announced. she's live in the newsroom. ((vanessa murphy)) police say they watched this las vegas man say he will begin killing, he will fire his gun to start a civil war with the united states and the government, and that he made mention of targeting certain groups like homosexuals.... the evidence in the case: a 15 minute rant on a youtube video...where he talked about how he's tired of america and the government trying to take away rights... according to an arrest report, the post on july 1st has since been removed by google who alerted authorities because of the concern people were in danger.... this is a youtube page we found which appears to be connected to cuellar.... police say the video at the center of the indictment just announced today was similar to martyrdom and propoganda videos produced by international terrorist organizations. and that cuellar was seen in military gear with a sniper rifle and ar-15 type of gun.

((dave courvoisier)) >> but martin shkreli the former head of turing pharmaceuticals who gained fame for boosting the price of a vital drug is speaking out. he's defending mylan's increase, even though he has no connection to that company or epi-pen. vinita nair spoke with shkreli. "important medicine should be expensive because they're valuable." december 17, 2015 the former pharmaceutical chief martin shkreli gained notoriety last year by ratcheting-up the cost of a malaria and h-i-v medication -- by five-thousand percent. he defend increase... from about 100- dollars for a two- pack in 2009 ... to more than 600- dollars this year. on their cell phones or driving and working on their computers? sheriff lombardo that's unfortunate. there is an exception to the law, for public safety. as a matter of policy and practice we don't condone that on the police department. we do have policy in place to prohibit that. it's recommended for the officers- just like anyone- to pull over and conduct their business. exemption in place for public safety because of the need for communication to be expedited. we get a lot of our information for calls we respond to via the computer system.
